The family of Levi Camburn was the first to settle here, and he became its first postmaster on March 10, 1862. The city was renamed for U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton in 1863. Giles Gilbert was a significant figure in the lumbering business in Stanton in the late 1860s-early 1880s. In 1877, he built this house for his own use, and lived there until 1882, when he moved to Mecosta, Michigan, to continue lumbering. The house in Stanton was later owned by James Willet, another prominent lumberman and mayor of Stanton. 2
