Extending graphite technology to lithium-ion batteries, solution processed carbon nanotubes (CNT) films are being looked into for use as both the current collector and anode material. CNTs have the ability to intercalate lithium and maintain high operating voltages, all with low mass loading and flexibility.
A lithium-ion or Li-ion battery is a type of rechargeable battery that uses the reversible intercalation of Li + ions into electronically conducting solids to store energy. In comparison with other commercial rechargeable batteries, Li-ion batteries are characterized by higher specific energy, higher energy density, higher energy efficiency, a longer cycle life, and a longer calendar life.
Anode-free lithium ion batteries have been demonstrated using a variety of cathode materials, such as LiFePO 4, LiCoO 2, and LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 (NMC 111).. These intercalation-type cathodes typically offer limited Li content (14.3 at.% for LiFePO4, 25 at.% for LiCoO2 and LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2), although they remain the primary research targets. [2]
A research concept has been proposed in which the major parts of lithium-ion batteries, that is, the anode, electrolyte, and cathode, are combined into one functional molecule. A layer of such functional molecules aligned by the Langmuir-Blodgett method is placed in between two current collectors. [5] The feasibility has not been confirmed yet.
In 2007, Michael Gratzel and his co-workers at the University of Geneva reported lithium-ion batteries, where the electroactive solids are stored as pure (i.e. without binders, conductive additives, current collectors) powders in tanks, and washed by liquids with dissolved redox couples, capable of electron exchange with the electroactive ...
This has been identified in studies involving grown silicon nanowires that are chemical bonded to the metal current collector by alloy formation. Sample production of batteries using a silicon nanowire-graphite composite electrode were produced by Amprius in 2014, [8] which claims to have sold several hundred thousand of these batteries as of ...

The equivalent circuit model (ECM) is a common lumped-element model for Lithium-ion battery cells. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The ECM simulates the terminal voltage dynamics of a Li-ion cell through an equivalent electrical network composed passive elements, such as resistors and capacitors , and a voltage generator .
