Fort George Wright, ca. 1918. In 1895, local residents purchased the area then known as Twickenham Park, which was deeded to the government for the construction of a military post. With Congress’ authorization, the $40,000 purchase of 1,022 acres (414 ha) was made in 1896. Construction of the fort began in 1897 and it officially opened in 1899.
Spokane Falls Community College was opened on the property of Fort George Wright in 1967. [9] In 1990, also on the property of Fort George Wright, the U.S. Campus of Mukogawa Women's University was opened. Many of the historic buildings from Fort Wright remain in use on the Mukogawa campus. [10]

In 1982, Fort Wright College moved its administration to Toppenish and was renamed Heritage College, which operated there and in Omak, while maintaining the Spokane campus. Five years later, the Spokane campus was closed. A fire which started on July 8, 2012, destroyed the university's oldest building, Petrie Hall. [2]
