In the hospital last month suffering from pneumonia, Sonny Leonard, Sonny’s Racing Engines’ president and CEO, passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2021. The engine shop broke the news on Facebook that it’s owner, founder and legendary engine builder, Sonny Leonard, had died. He was 77.

From those humble beginnings in December of 1968, Sonny’s World Class Racing rose in prominence with innovative engine designs and uncompromising performance. That’s resulted in well over 100 national and world records on land and sea.

Legendary drag racing engine builder Sonny Leonard, whose name is virtually synonymous with big-inch mountain motor Pro Stock and Pro Modified racing, has passed away. After building engines as a hobby, Leonard opened a two-bay shop known as Sonny’s Garage in 1968 in Madison Heights, Virginia.
