Jay Cooke State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, protecting the lower reaches of the Saint Louis River. The park is located about 10 miles (16 km) southwest of Duluth and is one of the ten most visited state parks in Minnesota. The western half of the park contains part of a rocky, 13-mile (21 km) gorge.
This mansion was built circa 1829 by Peter Ege when he was ironmaster of the Pine Grove Iron Works, located nearby.Notable owners after Ege were Fredericks Watts, lawyer, Cabinet member in the U.S. Grant Administration and founder of Penn State University, and Jay Cooke, an early American investment banker and financier of the Union during the Civil War.
The trail extends to the northeast through Jay Cooke State Park, the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area, Brewer Park, Enger Park, the Historic Downtown Area, Canal Park, the Lakewalk, and Hartley Nature Center, before it ends at a trailhead located on Martin Road on the north side of the city. The Duluth section is particularly suited for day hiking.

The forest is a mixture of coniferous boreal forest, alder-willow brushlands, lowland bogs, and wild rice (Zizania palustris) laden lakes.The current forest cover was largely influenced by the 1918 Cloquet Fire and the controlled burns that took place until the 1930s, as well as the drainage of area lowlands from 1916 to 1920 for the purposes of homesteading.
