  2. Idle Mixture Adjustment - Lycoming - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/idle-mixture-adjustment-lycoming-13046

Adjusting idle mixture on Lycoming (O-360 & O-540 carbureted) engines: The idle mixture screw is typically set somewhere between 1.5 and 2 turns out from the full "in" position. Set the screw in the middle of this range. With a warm engine, shut down by pulling the mixture all the way out. As the mixture leans, rpm should increase by 50rpm.

  3. Identifying Corrosion in a Lycoming that has sat idle

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/identifying-corrosion-in-a-lycoming-that-has-sat...

Aircraft engines are air-cooled and the internal working tolerances are loose. Water-cooled engines can be built tighter. Most automobile engines quickly recycle and eat their own combustion byproducts that get by the piston rings and valve guides then enter the crankcase.

  4. 200hp packages for experimental - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/200hp-packages-for-experimental-11078

Lycoming's specs call for a 14 gram balance across pistons (or something equally bad) which is the equivalent of cutting a small chunk of the end of one prop. Same for the crank. Inbalance in an engine causes bearing loads to fluctuate wildly and this increases friction and oil heating.

  5. MoGas approved by Lycoming on many 360 engines

  7. The New Lycoming 350HP iE2 540 Series Engine - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/the-new-lycoming-350hp-ie2-540-series-engine-20220

Lycoming apparently has this engine on three different tracks, namely certified, experimental, and for special military intelligence gathering platforms. iE2 Engine Lancair Evolution Seems for some people building the right plane this could be an interesting powerplant. I have seen older 540 series engines mounted in Bearhawks for example.

  8. Aggressive LOP power settings -540 - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/aggressive-lop-power-settings-540-17185

Lycoming says DO NOT lean their engines below 5000 ft DA. Of course, they also say don't run their engines LOP. Continental says don't lean their big engines above 75% power.....which, coincidentally is roughly equal to the power of a normally aspirated engine operating at 5000 DA. Think there might be a clue there?

  9. Lycoming AD & MSB No. 632B - Backcountry Pilot

Lycoming AD & MSB No. 632B. Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune ...

  10. Lycoming Leaning Techniques - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/lycoming-leaning-techniques-3891

Ok, not to start the age old debate again, but I am interrested in hearing what the "collective" is doing out there for leaning aircraft engines. I fly an aircraft with an IO-360 A series fuel injected lycoming and curious as to the accepted real world procedure out there. I have read all of the info that Lycoming has to offer on their website.

  11. Continental vs Lycoming - Backcountry Pilot

    backcountrypilot.org/forum/continental-vs-lycoming-22993

A new version of the Piper Archer TX is being introduced to the trainer market that has a new Continental branded IO-370 in it. It's a Lycoming engine. How is Continental able to compete against Lycoming with Lycoming's own engine design and Lycoming is silent on the matter.
