Customer: My thumb 'pops' to bend and unbend . The popping is at the joint near the nail, but seems to be connected to the joint at the base of the thumb as with a tendon or ligament. It is painful, particularly when popping to a open or straight position. This happened suddenly a few weeks ago and has not improved.
Ahh, well popping around the thumb is usually due to either a tendon snapping over a bony prominence (things like DeQuervain's tenosynovitis), instability (things like a chronic ligament injury), or basal joint arthritis.

The commonest cause for popping in and out of thumb joint is recurrent dislocation due to degenerative arthritis. Following measures can be helpful; 1) Physical therapy. 2) Thumb brace (should be worn only in day time not during sleep). 3) Local steroid shot. If you have diabetes; it should be meticulously controlled.
