The FDA recalled 60 doughnut products, totaling more than 2 million cases, for potential listeria contamination. The doughnuts were sold throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The recall, which impacts approximately 2 million baked goods in the U.S., was initially issued on Jan. 7 and was upgraded to Class II on Feb. 5, according to the FDA report.
Bimbo Bakeries USA then entered the U.S. bread market in 1997 with the acquisition of Pacific Pride Bakeries of San Diego. The company grew again in 1998 with the purchase of Mrs Baird's Bakeries in Texas, which at the time was the largest family-owned bakery in the U.S.
In January 2013 it was announced that Flowers Foods had offered to buy six of Hostess' bread brands, including Wonder Bread. The deal, initially structured at $360 million, involved 20 bakeries and 38 depots.
