The Fayette County Board of Education consists of members elected to four year terms from five districts, as well as the Superintendent. Districts 1, 3, and 5 hold elections in presidential election years, while Districts 2, and 4 hold elections in mid-term years.
The Dunbar High School was a segregated public high school for African-American students founded in 1922, and located at 545 North Upper Street in the Northside neighborhood in Lexington. [12] It was named after the 19th century African-American poet and writer, Paul Laurence Dunbar , whose parents were from Kentucky. [ 13 ]
The school was formed in 1951 through the merger of two secondary schools: St. Catherine's Academy, founded in 1823, and Lexington Latin High, founded in 1924. Lexington Catholic moved to its current location in 1957. In 2007, the school was named a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. [4]
Lexington's football team has been to the IHSA state championship 5 times: in 1980, 1990, 1994, 2001, and 2009. Long-time Lexington Football Coach (1968-1984) and Illinois High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame inductee Jim Mannaioni led the Minutemen to their first state finals game in 1980 where they lost 16-17 to Atwood-Hammond.
