The Chicago Ridge Mall began construction in 1980 as a $50 billion project at the site of the former Starlite Drive-In Theatre, which closed in 1979 after a 31-year run. Ridge Avenue, also called Ridge Boulevard from Devon Avenue and Howard Street is a street in Chicago and Evanston. It begins at Broadway and Bryn Mawr Avenue in Chicago. From here, it carries U.S. Route 14 to Peterson Avenue. U.S. Route 14 continues south onto Broadway and west onto Peterson Avenue.
Its history as an urban center began in the 1840s, eventually becoming the largest commercial center in Chicago, outside of the Loop. [2] There is evidence that Native Americans used a ridge along Milwaukee Avenue as a campsite, [ 3 ] which would have been higher than the generally swampy surrounding land.
The area was formerly part of the town of Lake until it was annexed by Chicago in 1889. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was occupied largely by Eastern European immigrants and their descendants, who were predominantly ethnic Lithuanian, Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak. [3]
