Yearling Trail in the Juniper Prairie Wilderness. The author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings visited the last two remaining inhabitants, Calvin and Mary Long in October 1933. She recorded the stories she was told on that occasion and other visits, which she worked into her novel The Yearling which was published in 1938 and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1939.
Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park is located on the eastern shore of Orange Lake, a short way south of the village of Cross Creek. The park is about 8 acres (3.2 ha) in size, but is adjacent to public lands totalling about 115 acres (47 ha) historically part of the Rawlings property.
