Lampasas County (/ l æ m ˈ p æ s ə s / lam-PASS-əs) is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 21,627. [1] Its county seat is Lampasas. [2] The county is named for the Lampasas River. Lampasas County is part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan area.
By 1907, the Stockyards sold a million cattle per year. The stockyards was an organized place where cattle, sheep, and hogs could be bought, sold and slaughtered. Fort Worth remained an important part of the cattle industry until the 1950s. Business suffered due to livestock auctions held closer to where the livestock were originally produced. [3]
Construction began in 1909 and was completed in 1911, as the largest livestock exchange building in the world. [2] In 1957, a one-story addition was constructed on the south side for the Golden Ox restaurant which had opened in 1949.
The naming rights to Kemper Arena were sold to Mosaic Life Care in 2016, but the healthcare company gave them back. The World Livestock Auctioneer Championship is an annual competition of livestock auctioneers who practice the auction chant typical of rural areas in the United States and Canada. The competition is sponsored by the Livestock Marketing Association and was first held in 1963. [1] Brian Curless won the competition in 2017.
