Earl of Radnor, of the County of Radnor, is a title which has been created twice. It was first created in the Peerage of England in 1679 for John Robartes, 2nd Baron Robartes , a notable political figure of the reign of Charles II .
John Robartes was born in London in 1686. He was the son of Francis Robartes and his second wife Lady Anne, was the widow of Hugh Boscawen of Tregothnan, and daughter of Wentworth Fitzgerald, 17th Earl of Kildare. [1] He was educated at Eton and Christ's College, Cambridge. [2]
John Robartes, 1st Earl of Radnor PC (1606 – 17 July 1685) was an English politician, peer and military officer who fought for the Parliamentary cause during the English Civil War. He retired from public life before the trial and execution of Charles I (1649) and did not take an active part in politics until after the Restoration in 1660.
Robartes was the son of Robert Robartes, Viscount Bodmin, eldest son of John Robartes, 1st Earl of Radnor and his wife Sarah Bodvel, second daughter of John Bodvel of Bodvile Castle, Cornwall and Ann Russell. His father was ambassador to Denmark in 1681, and his mother was a noted beauty.
Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 4th Earl of Radnor (18 September 1815 – 11 March 1889) was a British nobleman and army officer. He was the son of William Pleydell-Bouverie, 3rd Earl of Radnor and Judith Anne St John-Mildmay. He was styled Viscount Folkestone from 1828 until 1869. [1]
Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 2nd Earl of Radnor FRS FSA (4 March 1750 – 27 January 1828), styled Hon. Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie from 1761 to 1765 and Viscount Folkestone from 1765 to 1776, was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1771 to 1776 when he succeeded to the peerage as Earl of Radnor.
Robartes was the first son of Russell Robartes (1671–1719), by his marriage to Lady Mary Booth, a daughter of Henry Booth, 1st Earl of Warrington. He had a brother and two sisters. His father was a younger son of Robert Robartes, Viscount Bodmin, the eldest son and heir of John Robartes, 1st Earl of Radnor.
William Pleydell-Bouverie, 3rd Earl of Radnor (11 May 1779 – 9 April 1869), styled Viscount Folkestone until 1828, was the son of Jacob Pleydell-Bouverie, 2nd Earl of Radnor and the Hon. Anne Duncombe.
