Phan Văn Trường was born on 25 September 1876 in Đông Ngạc commune, Từ Liêm district, Hà Nội, in a family of academics. From the young age, he was well known for his intelligence and being hardworking, he started by studying Chinese characters , then switched to studying Chữ quốc ngữ and the French language .
Pham Van Dong is the longest serving Prime Minister of Vietnam, over 30 years from 1955 to 1987 and a student and close associate of Ho Chi Minh. His nickname is To, this used to be his alias. He was also called Lam Ba Kiet when he worked as Deputy Director of the District Attorney's Office in Guilin (the director was Ho Hoc Lam).

In Vietnamese it is called both làng lụa Vạn Phúc "Van Phuc silk village" and làng lụa Hà Đông after the larger village ("làng") area name. It is the best known silk village in Vietnam, and one of the best developed and most visited craft village near Hanoi which has over 90 officially designated handicraft villages.
