Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an environmental education program for teaching children about trees and forests using hands-on activities. It was created in 1976, after passage of the first National Environmental Education Act in 1970 and celebration of the first Earth Day in 1970, raised the profile of environmental education in the United States.
Among activities undertaken by Free the Planet! are the following: Expanding the student environmental movement by recruiting students who are concerned about the environment to take action, networking student activists with each other and the larger environmental movement, and providing fresh opportunities and ideas for activists.
At the undergraduate and graduate level, it can be considered its own field within education, environmental studies, environmental science and policy, ecology, or human/cultural ecology programs. Environmental education is not restricted to in-class lesson plans. Children can learn about the environment in many ways.
Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in collaboration with its Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing (CEISMC) created the GoSTEAM program. GoSTEAM is a program that integrates art and music into STEM focused curriculum for students in the K-12 ( kindergarten to twelfth grade studies).
The curriculum consists of 28 modules (four per grade) that touch on a variety of science and technology topics. PLTW Gateway is the middle school level, covering grades six through eight. It consists of 10 different modules, which can be taught in any order, so schools can organize the modules into courses as best fits their own schedules.
