The Malawi Parliament Building is a state building located in the city centre of Lilongwe and serves as the seat of the National Assembly of Malawi, the country's supreme legislative body. The building is also open to the public for guided tours and educational programs.

In 1994, Malawi had a new constitution and democracy. The constitution was claimed to be one of the most "gender-sensitive" in the world. [1] In 1996, there were nine women among the 177 members of Malawi's parliament. The idea of a women's caucus was put forward and the nine politicians put aside their party allegiances to work together.

The Malawi Congress Party was the successor to the Nyasaland African Congress (NAC) party, which was banned in 1959. The MCP was founded in 1959 by Orton Chirwa, Nyasaland's first African barrister, soon after his release from Gwelo Prison, and other NAC leaders including Aleke Banda and S. Kamwendo, in agreement with Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who remained in prison.
