On May 3, 1984, the house was recognized by the National Park Service with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. [2] Singer Richard Marx bought the house in 1997 for $4.7 million, and listed it for sale in 2014 for $18 million. [citation needed] The property was sold March of 2020 for $4.2 million to buyers unidentified. [3]

[3] The estate is located in the western Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, Illinois, United States, and is now part of the Mayslake Forest Preserve administered by the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County.
The house was built in the Italianate style for Moline grocer William B. Dawson around 1870. [2] [3] The property consisted of three lots, and included the house, a barn, outbuildings, a carriageway, fruit trees, grapery, and select plants. [4] Dawson, however, defaulted on the property and John Deere purchased the house and the three lots in 1875.
