The lake is located in the Dixie National Forest in a high tourist use area near three national parks and one national monument. Panguitch Lake contains several campgrounds. Convenience stores and a Latter-day Saint chapel are within walking distance of the campgrounds, and the roads are well paved and maintained.
SR-143 continues its descent, heading northeast alongside Panguitch Creek [3] [4] as it enters Garfield County and exits Dixie National Forest. The name was derived from the local description of the warm southern part of Utah as "Dixie". [5] In 1906 the U.S. Forest Service assumed responsibility for the lands, and on March 4, 1907 it became a National Forest. The western part of Sevier National Forest was added on July 1, 1922, and all of Powell National Forest on October 1, 1944. [3]
