Old Bethel United Methodist Church is located at 222 Calhoun Street, Charleston, South Carolina. It is the oldest Methodist church still standing in the city. [2] [3] Originally built about 1797/1798 for the Bethel Methodist congregation, after 1854 this structure was moved from its first place on the site and reserved for its black members.
In January 1907, the city council agreed to lease the hall to the College of Charleston to house its museum, thereafter known as the Charleston Museum, for a nominal rent. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] In October 1981, a fire destroyed the hall about one year after the museum moved to Meeting Street, leaving only its four grand columns.
It is operated as a public park under a lease by the city of Charleston. Under the terms of the lease, the center of the square is kept open as a parade ground. [8] Marion Square is situated directly across from Citadel Square Church and the South Carolina State Arsenal (Old Citadel).
The French Quarter is within the original "walled" city of Charleston.
