The first heat is split into several divisions, with the top finishers in each division returning to contest the second heat. A horse wins the Little Brown Jug by winning both heats.

[ 2 ] The Cane Pace was inaugurated in 1955 as the Cane Futurity and was initially raced at Yonkers Raceway ; it has been held at Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey since 2015.
