[citation needed] The area thrives partly due to tourism. There are also numerous retirement communities in the Charlotte Harbor area.
The fishing season along the Florida coast was late fall and winter, October or November until February or March. The primary fishing area was the "Coast of Tampa", including the "Port of Tampa" and the "Port of Sanibel" (Charlotte Harbor). Fishing also occurred in the Florida Keys and along the lower Atlantic coast of Florida. [3]
Later in the 18th century and as late as 1835 Muspa Indians, possibly descendants of people who lived in the Calusa town of Muspa (on or near Marco Island) were reported to be living in the Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island area. Around 1784, Jose Caldez of Cuba began using Useppa Island as the base for his seasonal fishing operations.

Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park is a 46,000-acre (190 km 2) Florida State Park, composed of islands and land that surrounds Charlotte Harbor. It is part of the Southwest Florida Water Management District and protects the Gasparilla Sound / Charlotte Harbor, Cape Haze , Matlacha Pass , and Pine Island Sound aquatic preserves. [ 1 ]
