U.S. Route 40 (US 40) runs east–west across south central Illinois for 159.8 miles (257.2 km). US 40 enters the state from Missouri across the Poplar Street Bridge over the Mississippi River at East St. Louis concurrent with Interstate 55 (I-55) and I-64 and exits just south of State Line, Indiana, running concurrently with I-70.

Here also, US 30 bypasses the majority of the town, intersecting Illinois Route 40 (IL 40) and having an interchange with Interstate 88 (I-88) on the southeast side of Rock Falls. East of Rock Falls, US 30 turns directly eastward and intersects IL 26 well south of Dixon. It also intersects US 52 at a remote location north of Amboy in Lee County.

Interstate 474 (I-474) is an Interstate Highway loop route that provides a southwestern bypass around the north-central Illinois city of Peoria. I-474's parent Interstate is I-74 . As the first digit of the Interstate's number is even, it follows the established convention of providing a loop around a city.
For 2.3 miles (3.7 km), the route parallels SR 19 with 1 ⁄ 2 mile (0.80 km) of space in between the two. SR 14 then turns east. On its way toward South Whitley, the route serves the following: SR 15 in Silver Lake, SR 13, and Collamer. Between Collamer and South Whitley, the route parallels the Eel River.
