John Russell, self-portrait c. 1780 John Russell RA (29 March 1745 – 20 April 1806) was an English painter renowned for his portrait work in oils and pastels , and as a writer and teacher of painting techniques.

The house contains some of Guildford borough's art collection including the world's largest public collection of pastel portraits by Guildford-born artist, John Russell, RA (1745–1806). Guildford House hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year.
Her new husband was concerned about the rise of John Philip Kemble as a competitor and his Elizabeth taught John to sing to help him compete. They had four daughters and his wife retired in 1792 to concentrate on their family. [2] In 1799 John Russell completed a pastel of her playing her guitar which is in the National Portrait Gallery. The pastel still life paintings and portraits of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin are much admired, as are the works of the Swiss-French artist Jean-Étienne Liotard. In 18th-century England the outstanding practitioner was John Russell. In Colonial America, John Singleton Copley used pastel occasionally for portraits.

Jane de Courcy Russell (1779–1810) was an English pastellist. Born in London, Russell was the daughter of painter John Russell ; her siblings William , Anne , and Maria also became artists. She married Joshua Jowett (1776–1845), a “furnishing ironmonger & brazier”, in 1802, two years before he patented a fire-guard stove.
John Peter Russell (16 June 1858 – 30 April 1930) was an Australian impressionist painter. Born and raised in Sydney , Russell moved to Europe in his late teenage years to attend art school. There, he befriended fellow pupil Vincent van Gogh and, in 1886, painted the first oil portrait of the artist, now held at the Van Gogh Museum .
