The Hotel Alexandria is a historic building constructed as a luxury hotel at the beginning of the 20th century in what was then the heart of downtown Los Angeles.As the business center of the city moved gradually westward, the hotel decayed and gradually devolved into a single-room occupancy (SRO) hotel housing long-term, low income residents and gained a reputation for crime and being unsafe.
In February 2008, designer Darrell Schmitt completed a multimillion-dollar remodel of all 129 guest rooms and suites, adding new furniture, artwork, flat-screen televisions, windows, wallpaper, mirrors and drapes. [2] Los Angeles magazine said the renovation had restored the hotel "to its Gatsbyesque glory." [10]
Managed by Rim Hospitality Inc., the hotel is located in the Little Tokyo area of downtown Los Angeles at 120 South Los Angeles Street. The hotel was constructed by the Tokyo-based Kajima Corporation and designed by Japanese-American architect Hayahiko Takase. [1] It opened in 1977 as the New Otani Hotel & Garden.
