The VK 45.02 (P) was the official designation for an unsuccessful heavy tank project designed by Ferdinand Porsche in Nazi Germany during World War II to compete with Henschel's design. [1] Development of this vehicle started in April 1942, with two design variants (Ausf. A and Ausf. B) incorporating different features.
The engine was an upgraded version of the slightly smaller HL210 engine which was used to equip the first 250 Tiger I tanks built, and which had an aluminium crankcase and block. The earlier HL210 engine had a displacement of 21.353 L (1,303.0 cu in) or 1,779 cm³ per cylinder; bore 125 mm (4.9 in), stroke 145 mm (5.7 in).
The 8.8 cm KwK 36 was derived from the 8.8 cm Flak 36 anti-aircraft gun by adapting/modifying it to the limited space available in tank turrets. Parts of the KwK 36 were built to practically the same design as the 75-millimetre (3.0 in) and 50-millimetre (2.0 in) guns already used in German tanks.
