Belmond Reid's Palace (a.k.a. Reid's Palace) is a historic hotel located to the west of Funchal Bay in Madeira, Portugal, in an imposing position looking out over the Atlantic Ocean. [1] [2] The hotel has sloping gardens. [3] The hotel's complex include more than 40,000 square meters of space designed as a subtropical botanical garden.
Construction began in the early 1970s. After more than a decade of construction, the hotel opened its doors to guests in 1989. [2] The design featured views of Rittenhouse Square, angling the windows to offer each room a direct view of the square below. Much of the hotel’s original design is still intact.
The hotel is located in an Edwardian building known as Inveresk House, also called the Morning Post Building, constructed between 1907 and 1910 by the firm of Mewès and Davis, the same architects who designed The Ritz. [1]
The hotel opened in 1929 and combines Moroccan architecture with the Art Deco style. [8] In a 1935 letter to his wife, Winston Churchill wrote about the hotel; "This is a wonderful place, and the hotel is one of the best I have ever used". [13] One of the bars at the hotel is now named after Churchill. [14]
