Pergamon Press was an Oxford-based publishing house, founded by Paul Rosbaud and Robert Maxwell, that published scientific and medical books and journals. Originally called Butterworth-Springer , it is now an imprint of Elsevier .
In 1989, he had to sell successful businesses, including Pergamon Press, to cover some of his debts. In 1991, his body was discovered floating in the Atlantic Ocean, having apparently fallen overboard from his yacht. He was buried in Jerusalem. Maxwell's death triggered the collapse of his publishing empire as banks called in loans.
Pergamon then started renumbering the volumes, starting with volume 1 in 1977. [2] Elsevier acquired Pergamon Press in 1991 and has published the journal since. In the 1990s, Endeavour moved away from publishing scientific reviews and began to focus on the history of science .
