I don't believe cheese kanafeh is typical in Greece--kadaifi is filled with nuts (like baklava). The lead seems to be conflating the dough and the dish. The Levant specifically (not the Ottoman domains in general) seems to be the core region; note that Antakya and Gaziantep (Aintab) are part of the Levantine cultural area in many ways.
