Pettigrew State Park is a North Carolina State Park in Tyrrell and Washington Counties, North Carolina in the United States. It covers 5,951 acres (24.08 km 2) [2] around the shore lines of Lake Phelps and the Scuppernong River. The park's developed facilities are south of U.S. Route 64 near Roper and Creswell, North Carolina.
Lake Phelps is North Carolina's second largest natural lake. It has a surface area of 16,600 acres (67 km 2), [2] and is located primarily in Washington County on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula between the Albemarle Sound and the Pamlico Sound. The easternmost part of the lake extends into Tyrrell County.
The Lake Phelps Site is an archaeological site containing much evidence of prehistoric occupation. The lake is in North Carolina. [1] Eleven archaeological investigations have been conducted at the lake over a course of 25 years. [2] Altogether the investigations "recovered over 5,000 artifacts and located and documented 23 canoes."

This land eventually was leased and then deeded to North Carolina for the creation of Pettigrew State Park in 1947. [5] The procurement of this land to the state led to many preservation events as in 1963 the 12,000 acre Pungo National Wildlife Refuge was established and in 1967 Somerset Place was established as a Historical Landmark.
Lake Phelps is 16,000 acres and is part of Pettigrew State Park in Creswell. Somerset Place is a restored antebellum plantation and NC Historic Site on Lake Phelps. [4] The Pungo Unit of the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in the southern part of the county is said to have the best public black bear viewing in North Carolina.
