Tulare Lake (/ t ʊ ˈ l ɛər i / ⓘ) or Tache Lake (Yokuts: Pah-áh-su, Pah-áh-sē) is a freshwater lake in the southern San Joaquin Valley, California, United States. Historically, Tulare Lake was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River . [ 2 ]
The Tule River Reservation was established in 1873 by a US Executive Order in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. The reservation is the site of Painted Rock , an ancient petroglyph site. Located south of Fresno and north of Bakersfield , [ 12 ] it occupies 55,356 acres (224.02 km 2 ). 566 tribal members live on the reservation. [ 3 ]
Painted Rock is an archaeological and sacred site of the Yokuts of the Tule River Indian Tribe of the Tule River Reservation in Tulare County, California. [1] [2] Painted Rock contains petroglyphs visited and described by Walter James Hoffman in 1882 [3] and by Clinton Hart Merriam in 1903. [4]
