Houston County was the last county created in the state, on February 9, 1903. [3] According to 2023 U.S. Census data, the average population of Alabama's 67 counties is 76,246, with Jefferson County as the most populous (662,895), and Greene County (7,341) the least. [7] The average land area is 756 sq mi (1,958 km 2).
As of May 2012, Jefferson County had slashed expenses and reduced employment of county government workers by more than 700. [18] The county emerged from bankruptcy in December 2013, following the approval of a bankruptcy plan by the United States bankruptcy court for the Northern District of Alabama , writing off more than $1.4 billion of the debt.
The company's schools were turned over to the Jefferson County School System in 1932 and the social science department was dismantled the following year. During the Second World War, employment in Docena reached a peak of 1,228. These workers were more mobile and less dependent on the company for goods, services and recreation.
The Jefferson County Courthouse in Birmingham, Alabama is the main county courthouse of Jefferson County, Alabama. It is the county's sixth main courthouse building, and the third in Birmingham. The cornerstone was laid in 1929, and the building was completed in 1932. The prior courthouse was demolished in 1937.
