The Ashvins, in Hindu belief, are two Vedic gods, divine twin horsemen in the Rigveda, sons of Saranyu, a goddess of the clouds and wife of Surya in his form as Vivasvant. They are represented as humans with the heads of horses. Badavā - 'A mare, the submarine fire.' In belief, it is a flame with the head of a horse, called also Haya-siras.

The animal is a common motif in the Pata-Chitra style of painting, of the Eastern Indian state of Odisha. It is considered an astral form of the god Vishnu, or of Krishna, who is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
