The Westin Book Cadillac Detroit is an historic skyscraper hotel in downtown Detroit, Michigan, within the Washington Boulevard Historic District.Designed in the Neo-Renaissance style, and opened as the Book-Cadillac Hotel in 1924, the 349 ft (106 m), 31-story, 453-room hotel includes 65 exclusive luxury condominiums and penthouses on the top eight floors.
The developer selected a site near the Detroit River, in an area that was, until then, primarily used for exclusive upper-class homes. [2] Construction began in 1921, and ran until 1927. [3] Over the years, the luxury hotel attracted wealthy guests such as Horace Dodge, Eleanor Roosevelt, Mae West, Frank Sinatra and The Beatles. [3]
[12] [13] The hotel reopened on July 17, 2013, as the Crowne Plaza Detroit Downtown Convention Center. [14] Its name was later modified to Crowne Plaza Detroit Downtown Riverfront. Due to the quality of the renovation, the hotel was awarded Development of the Year by InterContinental Hotels Group in 2013.
The hotel underwent a $5 million renovation, which included the addition of a new conference center, and reopened in May 2011 as the Roberts Riverwalk Hotel. [ 10 ] In 2002, National Park Service staff recommended withdrawal of the site's landmark status due to loss of the building's historic integrity during the conversion.
The hotel reopened as the 'DoubleTree Guest Suites by Hilton Detroit Downtown - Fort Shelby on December 15, 2008. The restored hotel contains 203 guest suites, 56 apartments on the upper floors, a 21,000-square-foot (2,000 m 2) conference center with two ballrooms and 17 Breakout rooms.
