The Beast (French: La Bête) is a 2023 science fiction romantic drama film directed and written by Bertrand Bonello from a story he co-wrote with Guillaume Bréaud and Benjamin Charbit. A co-production between France and Canada, the film is loosely based on Henry James 's 1903 novella The Beast in the Jungle .
The Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky liked the film. [16] The Gospel According to Matthew was ranked number 10 (in 2010) and number 7 (in 2011) in the Arts and Faith website's Top 100 Films, [17] also is in the Vatican's list of 45 great films and Roger Ebert's Great Movies list. [18] [19]
According to the critic review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, The Gospel has an approval rating of 32% based on 37 reviews by film critics. The website's critics consensus reads, "While it features outstanding musical numbers, The Gospel reduces a series of worthy themes -- faith, family, forgiveness -- to soapy, banal clichés." [6]
Andrew Barker of Variety also gave the film a positive review and wrote, "At times hesitant to press Talley on some uncomfortable but important aspects of his life, the film amounts to essentially a long, intimate brunch conversation with its inimitable subject, and for those with even a passing interest in fashion, that should be plenty."
A Spanish-Italian 80%–20% co-production, [4] the film was produced by Andrés Vicente Gómez' Iberoamericana Films Producción alongside Sogetel and M.G. S.R.L in collaboration with Sogepaq and Canal Plus España. [5] It had a 300 million ₧ budget. [6] A soundtrack for the film was released in Spain and Korea.
