The Baldwin family’s patrilineal line traces to a Richard “Rich” Baldwin, who lived in England, c. the 1500s. Through their father Alexander Rae Baldwin Jr., the Baldwin brothers are descended from the Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley, as well as from William Bradford through their maternal grandfather, Daniel LeRoy Martineau. Dwight Hamilton Baldwin (September 15, 1821 – August 23, 1899) was a piano manufacturer in the United States, famous as the eponym and introducer of the Baldwin Piano. Born in Erie County, Pennsylvania , Baldwin began his career as a teacher of the reed organ and violin .
Baldwin also starred in the television series The Young Riders (1989–1992) and as himself in the reality shows Celebrity Big Brother 7, which he placed 9th, in the United Kingdom and The Celebrity Apprentice. In 2004, he directed Livin' It, a Christian-themed skateboarding DVD. He is the youngest of the four Baldwin brothers.
The company traces its origins to 1857, when Dwight Hamilton Baldwin began teaching piano, organ, and violin in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1862, Baldwin started a Decker Brothers piano dealership and, in 1866, hired Lucien Wulsin as a clerk. Wulsin eventually became a partner in the dealership, which by then was known as the D.H. Baldwin & Company.
