The Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) (Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae Dhoire) or Derry GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. It is responsible for Gaelic games in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland (the GAA refers to the county as Derry). [ 1 ]
The Derry county football team represents Derry GAA, the county board of the Gaelic Athletic Association, in the Gaelic sport of football. [2] The team competes in the three major annual inter-county competitions; the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship , the Ulster Senior Football Championship and the National Football League .
Ulster GAA ← 2023 The 2024 Dr McKenna Cup , known for sponsorship reasons as the Bank of Ireland Dr McKenna Cup , is a Gaelic football competition in the province of Ulster for county teams.
They play in the Derry GAA league and championships, and currently cater for Gaelic football. Doire Trasna fields Gaelic football teams at U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, Minor , and Senior levels. Underage teams up to U-12's play in North Derry league and championships, from U-14 upwards teams compete in All-Derry competitions.
The club won the Derry Junior Football Championship in 1974 and is the only Derry City side to have played in Intermediate ranks for the majority of its existence. Derry also won another Ulster Junior (1984) and All-Ireland Junior Championship (1982), with Rory Stevenson still holding a record of his own, as the youngest person ever to play in a Final in Croke Park, that year (1982), playing for Kevin Lynch's Hurling Club Under 14 All-Ireland Féile na nGael winning team.
The Derry Intermediate Football Championship is the second-tier Derry championship and is competed for by the Division 2 clubs. The trophy is named after John Bateson (19), James Sheridan (20) and Martin Lee (18), all members of the South Derry Brigade of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died whilst priming a bomb in Magherafelt on 18 December 1971.
The club is a member of Derry GAA and currently caters for both Gaelic football and camogie. Underage teams up to U-12s play in North Derry league and championships, from U-14 upwards teams compete in All-Derry competitions. Limavady have won the Derry Intermediate Football Championship once and the Derry Junior Football Championship three times.
