Congaree National Park is a 26,692.6-acre (41.7 sq mi; 108.0 km 2) national park of the United States in central South Carolina, 18 miles southeast of the state capital, Columbia. The park preserves the largest tract of old growth bottomland hardwood forest left in the United States.
All of the animals on display within the Education Center were lost in the fire. The Nature Center was rebuilt beginning 2019 and reopened in September 2020. It is open daily from 10-5pm. Other park features include: the beach and jetty, hiking, and nature trails and boardwalks, the gift shop and a public campground.
] Although the beach is heavily eroded towards the southern end of the island, ample shore remains in the central section and in the campground areas towards the north end. The state park also features several trails for hiking and biking, including a 6.1-mile (9.8 km) loop trail that cuts through the maritime forest and along the lagoon.
