The modern campus of Washington & Jefferson College is located in the City of Washington and the East Washington Borough, small-town communities about 30 miles (48 km) south of Pittsburgh. In 1852, the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was founded at Jefferson College by two students who had formed a bond while treating their classmates during a typhoid outbreak on campus. [13] By 1863, the Jefferson and Washington chapters merged, as most members had enlisted to fight in the American Civil War. [13]
