This video shows you how to make a FLYING Machine in Minecraft Java 1.20.4! (Tutorial) The design is very simple and you can easily start/stop the machine whenever you want. The list of materials required to build this Start/Stop Flying Machine is easy to obtain and is shown at the beginning of the video.
Above: Peyj n's high speed drive. Moves at theoretical maximum speed of a piston-powered flying machine and uses no sticky pistons. Speed = 3.333 m/s (C/6) Above: 2 L-piece drivers made into a very compact bidirectional solid-state pushable flying machine. As you can see, some drives move dramatically faster than others.
My flying machine, used to collect kelp underwater, stops periodically until new kelp grows in front of the observer I would like to make it work all the ti... This site works best with JavaScript enabled.
In both editions of Minecraft, a unidirectional manually activated flying machine is possible as is a bi-directional flying machine. Then in Java Edition we can also make a self-resetting bi-directional flying machine.
Command blocks weren't added until Release 1.4.2 though (note that the OP is talking about Beta 1.7 (probably Beta 1.7.3 to be specific), not Release 1.7), so mods are the only way (note that the mods TileEntity mentions are for Release 1.7); you can't even use ender pearls for temporary "flight".
I've tried a few ways so far, but wherever I attach the chest, or blocks to stick the chest on, the machine breaks. Rollback Post to Revision RollBack #2 May 11, 2016
The smallest bi-directional vertical flying engine of which I am aware is 6 blocks (two each slime, S-piston, observer) qv. Smallest Bidirectional Flying Machine [6 Blocks] Vertical & Horizontal for an example... This would leave 9 blocks (of the 12 push limit) from which to form the player platform. [Ten if the upper observer is incorporated.]
nice to see someone's using SethBling's flying machine again. The solution was to add two control loops that would block each other if the machines were not started by a player. (see pictures below) The circuits are mirrored at the two opposite stations. I you have any questions about this, just ask. Best regards, Dalavar

I’ve already made multiple flying machine farms and a Java Edition semi-vanilla 1.13 server (including blaze farm, generic Nether mobs farm, sugar can farm, kelp farm, …) I know that they can stop and require manual restart or maintenance if chunks unload while they’re flying but that’s not the topic.
