William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson developed the first prototype of a Harley Davidson motorcycle in 1903. The engine was designed according to the system De Dion-Bouton, had a displacement of 167 cc and made about 2 ps (1.5 kW).
By 1906, they had produced a reliable and road-worthy motorcycle that they named the Harley-Davidson. Harley received a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1907. [4] [5] He co-founded Harley-Davidson with Arthur Davidson in 1903 and served as chief engineer and treasurer until his death in 1943.
Davidson was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to William C. Davidson (1846–1923), who was born and grew up in Angus, Scotland, and Margaret Adams McFarlane (1843–1933) of Scottish descent from the small Scottish settlement of Cambridge, Wisconsin; they raised five children together: Janet May, William A., Walter, Arthur and Elizabeth.
