The 14th Street Tunnel shutdown (also referred to as the L Project, the L train shutdown, or the Canarsie Tunnel reconstruction) was the partial closure and reconstruction of the New York City Subway's 14th Street Tunnel that took place from April 2019 to April 2020.
The Dual Contracts also called for a subway line initially known as the 14th Street–Eastern District Line, usually shortened to 14th Street–Eastern Line. The line would run beneath 14th Street in Manhattan, from Sixth Avenue under the East River and through Williamsburg to Montrose and Bushwick Avenues in Brooklyn. [ 15 ]

The 14th Street/Sixth Avenue station is an underground New York City Subway station complex in the Greenwich Village and Chelsea neighborhoods of Manhattan, on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line, the BMT Canarsie Line and the IND Sixth Avenue Line. It is located on 14th Street between Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas) and Seventh Avenue.
The Dual Contracts, which called for the expansion of the New York City Subway system, were formalized in early 1913. [4] As part of the Dual Contracts, the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company (later the Brooklyn–Manhattan Transit Corporation, or BMT) was to construct a subway from 14th Street in Manhattan to Canarsie in Brooklyn; this became the BMT's Canarsie Line.
In preparation for the 14th Street Tunnel shutdown in 2019, it was initially planned to reconfigure the split free/paid area at the south end of the station into an exclusively unpaid area. This would have removed the free transfer between platforms, but would have allowed for increased flow from passengers entering and exiting the station. [ 19 ]
