For this expansion to proceed, Westfield purchased sites within Miranda to relocate the police station and Miranda Congregational Church. In 1991 Westfield commenced construction of the expansion. This was completed in stages with the full opening on 1 October 1992 and gave the centre 108,316 square metres (1,165,900 square feet) of retail space.
In 1978 Waltons relocated to the newly built Westfield Hurstville and the space became vacant. The opening of Roselands and the redeveloped Miranda Fair had been blamed for a downturn in trade at Southside Plaza, and various redevelopment proposals were proposed but never eventuated. [ 3 ]
With the purchase of Miranda Fair (now Westfield Miranda) by the Westfield Group and the opening of nearby Westfield Hurstville in 1987 saw the centre fall into a gradual decline. During the 1990s the centre lost many stores with many vacant store spaces left including Franklins (which had replaced Coles ) closed.
