The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences traces its origins to 1963, when it opened as Dar es Salaam Medical School. The school became the faculty of medicine of the University of Dar es Salaam, in 1968. In 1976, the Faculty of Medicine was incorporated into Muhimbili Hospital to form the Muhimbili Medical Centre (MMC). [3]
It is the national referral hospital as well as academic and research facility for the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. It offers speciality care across the spectrum of clinical medicine. About 40% of its beds are for private patients. [1] The hospital employs around 2705 workers including 328 doctors and 946 nurses.
