The Maryland Independent was founded by John S. Button, a local printer and Freemason. [3] Its Republican slant paralleled the growing popularity of the Republican party in Charles County, and when former state's attorney Eugene Diggs [4] joined the newspaper as an editor in 1877, he maintained this advocacy for Republican candidates and policies. Daley and his partner, F. Marcellus Cox, ran the paper together until 1889, when Daley left Port Tobacco to pursue other opportunities. A competitor newspaper, the Maryland Independent, was begun in Port Tobacco in 1874, and its editor, Adrian Posey, narrowly averted a duel with Cox over comments published during the 1884 presidential election.
