Black Oak Arkansas is an American Southern rock band named after the band's hometown of Black Oak, Arkansas. The band reached the height of its fame in the 1970s, charting ten albums. [ 1 ] Their style is punctuated by multiple guitar players and the raspy voice and on-stage antics of vocalist Jim "Dandy" Mangrum .
Mangrum was born in the town of Benton Harbor, Michigan, [1] where his Arkansas-born parents were working at the time. The family returned to their home state and raised Mangrum in the small town of Black Oak, Arkansas. He was brought up a Southern Baptist and attended Monette High School, in Monette, Arkansas.
Starr toured with Black Oak Arkansas for several years at the height of their success. She was featured in their 1973 Top 30 single " Jim Dandy (To The Rescue)".
