The foundation stone of the Institute was laid by Late Shri Arjun Singh, the then Minister of Human Resource Development (MHRD) on February 7, 2005. On May 3, 2006 a land of 250 acres near Dumna Airport of Jabalpur was identified by the State Government of Madhya Pradesh and was handed over to the Institute.
In 2018, the MHRD clarified that the Raichur institute will officially replace the Kakinada one, and asked the state government to assign land for the institute, planning to make the institute functional by the following year. [18] However, since the land was not acquired, in 2019 the MHRD decided to shift the IIIT to Hyderabad, Telangana. [19]
