Sedgwick County is located in the U.S. state of Kansas. Its county seat is Wichita, [3] the most populous city in the state. As of the 2020 census, the population was 523,824, [1] making it the second-most populous county in Kansas. The county was named for John Sedgwick, the highest ranking Union general killed during the American Civil War.
St. John County was established in 1871, and formed from the area to the east of range 38 in what was then part of Wallace County. In 1885, the name was changed to Logan County. It is formed in southwestern Sedgwick County by the confluence of the North Fork Ninnescah River and the South Fork Ninnescah River. From there, it flows southeast into the Arkansas River Lowlands. It empties into the Arkansas River roughly 3 miles (4.8 km) north of Oxford, Kansas in eastern Sumner County. [4]
