Mittell was born in Merthyr Tydfil at the Royal Oak pub, where his mother, Tydfil, and father, James Lyons, were publicans. The family would later run the Bee Hive pub in Merthyr. [2] Mittell would later follow his parents into the publican business, owning the Silver Slipper pub on Pant Road in Merthyr.
Joseph Parry (21 May 1841 – 17 February 1903 ) – a Welsh composer and musician, born in Merthyr Tydfil. He is known best as the composer of the haunting Myfanwy , much loved by male voice choirs, and the hymn tune Aberystwyth (most familiar as the tune for "Jesu, Lover of My Soul").
