The Charleston Commercial Historic District encompasses the historic commercial center of Charleston, Arkansas. Extending along East Main Street ( Arkansas Highway 22 ) between Tilden Street and Arkansas Highway 217 , the district includes primarily single-story masonry commercial buildings built between 1900 and 1940.

Charleston is in southwestern Franklin County, along Arkansas Highway 22, which leads east 9 miles (14 km) to Ratcliff and west 24 miles (39 km) to Fort Smith.. According to the United States Census Bureau, Charleston has a total area of 4.4 square miles (11.4 km 2), of which 4.3 square miles (11.1 km 2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km 2), or 2.53%, is water.
The Singleton Family Cemetery is a historic cemetery on the western outskirts of Charleston, Arkansas. Established in the 1870s, it contains more than 120 graves; approximately half of these are marked graves. It is the oldest site associated with the early formation of Charleston, and several of its earliest settlers are buried here.
US 165 replaced Arkansas Highway 11 in much of Arkansas County, Arkansas. Highway 11 was the main route through the area since its designation in the original 1926 state highway system . Some of this original pavement has been preserved by the National Register of Historic Places as Old AR 11 – Kauffman Road .
