The show originated as an unsold pilot in 1983 hosted by Gene Rayburn called Party Line. The game play for the most part remained unchanged.
The show would start with the first part of the Face Off segment, where a multiplayer game is used to settle a dispute between two members of the public, or, in the second series, celebrities.
